Scholarships for Private Independent Schools

Ask a Question
Scholarships for Private Independent Schools
A scholarship is a means of financial assistance provided by another body or institution so that your child can pursue a line of education that may not be available to them under normal circumstances.

At the present time in the United Kingdom more than a fifth of all pupils at independent schools get some form of financial assistance with fees. Scholarships are generally awarded to pupils for academic, musical or artistic merit and normally do not take financial need into account.

A scholarship can be awarded to any pupil based entirely on their performance within a particular subject or field of education and irrespective of background, class or financial stability.

How Scholarships Are Awarded

Scholarships are awarded normally, as we have already touched on, to those pupils who show exceptional talent and/or intelligence in a particular area. This may be music or the arts or literature or indeed sport and, as such, there needs to be a financial input to enable these pupils to pursue further qualifications in these fields at private independent school level.

In order to do this, private independent schools will hold examinations based upon a shortlist of pupils gleaned from the mainstream school system and as a result a shorter list of prospective and talented pupils may be drawn up.

A further examination and interview may be held to further quantify the pupil’s interest and indeed willingness to pursue the obtaining of a scholarship.

If the scholarship is awarded it amounts to a maximum of 50% of the school fees that may be required during the course of a pupil’s education at private independent school. This will take into account board and lodgings should the school be outside the catchment area to such a degree that the pupil might need to reside there during term time.

There will also be such things as uniforms, textbooks, any sporting equipment, musical instruments or indeed any other item that falls outside the normal remit of an educational standard.

However, as a scholarship amounts to only 50% of the fees at a private independent school it may be necessary to seek a bursary if the pupil’s parents are not in a position financially to cover the shortfall between the amount granted in a scholarship and the overall amount of the fees incurred.

A bursary is an amount of money granted to make up the shortfall and is only granted after a series of means tests are carried out to ensure that a pupil’s parents are not in a position to make up the difference.

Although your child may be of a high intellect and of a high educational standard there is still no guarantee that a scholarship or bursary will be awarded. These are means tested and also granted on a limited number of places per year.

It is worthwhile mentioning that having looked at a varied number of private independent schools there is a generally accepted criterion across the board.

In saying this priority is given to the pupils of parents who are members of the clergy, members of the Armed Forces (both serving and non serving), teachers, and also to the children of former school pupils who have applied for scholarships at their chosen school.

That said do not let it put you off attempting to help your child gain a scholarship they have as much chance as anyone given the right exam results and the right advice.

As always with trying to place your child in any school it is important to understand the criteria laid down and also given the chance, inspect the school and speak with teachers and pupils alike for a more balanced view of how things operate.

As with all schools private or otherwise there will be a parent teacher association and as always this a good place to start if you are looking for an unbiased and realistic appraisal of your child’s chances. Read more about the school PTA on this site.

Hi,

We moved to the UK with my family two years ago due to my husband's job. I have two daughters (twin) and they are 14 years old (year 9). One of them has a talent for art, an original style. Recognized by her teachers in her class same time she is really interested in programming and she wants to be a character designer for games in the future. Another one is interested in programming as well and she is so passionate about this. Can you advise me if there is any specialized guidance to further their skills we live in Warwickshire Please also advise how to find out if they would be eligible for a scholarship as I am unable to afford private school education Kind regards JD.

JapaneseStrawberry 06/03/2020 at 7:38 pm
hi. I currently go to one of the top private schools in the UK and bursaries and scholarships are awarded for people who excel in the following catagories: Art, Music and Sport. You can also get an academic scholarship if you do exceptionally well in the exam and are one of the top. Scholarships can amount to £4,000 of your termly bill which in this case is more than half. (termly fees are around £6,000). I don't think if this helped any of you cases but it should give you an insight to what you're asking for.

I want to enquire about a possible scholarship for my 9 year old son for secondary school (September 2021).
He is academically very bright especially around maths. He is not sporty but a proper nerdy type. Would very much fit the slightly unusual Winchester/ Westminster type school (his father attended Westminster). But we obviously can’t afford that. So I am looking for something that will really work for him. We are in Hampshire.
Many Thanks

Hi, I am currently in year 9 and been wanting to go to a boarding school ever since year 7. Both my parents do not speak english well but have been living in England for over 10 years. I have recently asked my mum about joining a boarding school (Stoneyhurst College or Haberdashers’ Aske’s school for girls to be exact) because I really want to study as I seem to be inspired and I like it. I have loved school ever since I was 6 but went to the most odinary primary schools, however now I go to a all girls catholic school in St Albans which is rated quite well but I feel like I don’t get pushed far enough. When I mentioned about the boarding schools to my mum she happily accepted however when I mentioned about the prices that she had to pay, my smile flipped upside down. My mum was only willing to pay up to £25,000 or more less. I don’t know what to do... Me and my mum discussed this topic about 5 months ago and it’s been bugging me everyday. I would like help searching for boarding schools that would push me with my education and passion towards art and maths and help with maybe the scholarships and its applications.

My boy has been in a middle boarding school after winning a scholarship and bursary come September we could not get a bursary for his first senior school a competitor of Eton College. Although he has secured a place in a grammar boarding school, he has asked me. "Mum is there anywhere, where we can get funding to attend my first choice school in yr9?"Anybody with a answer, I think I have exhausted the resources.

Hello,

My son Jacen is just 25 months old. He is beyond anything at this point...recognizing numbers to 60, able to count to 30 unassisted (backwards too!), as well as knowing the entire alphabet on sight, and from memory (reciting without rhythmic devices). My concern being, we're not very well off, but want the best for our man. I was very similar in advancement for his age, and excelled skipping years, and attending university from age 12. Are there any recognizing programs that can identify with a cognitive advancement such as this at this age?

Hi I have a 8 year old son who is so smart and always has been. He started crawling from 4 mouths, walking at 6 mouths, talking from a year old where you could ask him something and he'll answer your question in full, out of nappies from 18 mouths, the list doesn't end. Anyway he always gets good feed back from school with his work and I really want to send him to private school start of year 7 so he can have a better education as he loses focus at times and I don't want him to go down hill. Could someone please help me on how I go about it.

Hi I'm trying to understand the scholarship system for most private schools. It seems that there are scholarships for year 7 and sixth form.
My daughter is year 9 and I'm wondering if it's possible to apply for art scholarship for year 10. I'm guessing it's too late but I can't make sense of the system on some school websites.
Anyone know how this works exactly?
Thanks in advance.

My five year old son is gifted. He is doing extremely well in school. I was told by his teacher thatraining that he is well above his peers. Even though he is in Reception, he is reading books that year one children read at the end of their year! Within the first week of school, he achieved all phase words checks. He can do basic addition and subtraction and he writes very well. I would like to know if there is anyway that I could get a bursary of some sort to help him get into a private school. I believe a private school setting would be very good for him.

Hello. I'm 14 and currently in yr 9, in the UK. I would love to be able to transfer to a private school and boost my chances of studying criminology at Harvard university. I can't afford to pay the fees required to be able to go to the best school. I hope to be able to earn a scholarship. I am currently achieving 9's (A**) in all of my subjects. I have won 2 golds at the UKJMC, Best In Year twice, Best in School once, and also represented my school in the team challenge. I have been involved in my local public speaking competition, BBC School News Report Day, and I am currently doing my bronze D of E award. I have been in numerous plays (I am currently in one now) and play the piano, guitar, and I am in my school and local choir. I have also represented my school in their Netball, Hockey, and Rounders teams. I have excellent attendance, and have been given many commendations from my school's Principal. I also am a Girl Guide, and have volunteered at quite a few events; including my local church, community group, and farms. I hope that due to my in school activities, out of school activities, and academic achievements, I will be able to earn funding to be able to go to a private school and achieve my dreams of going to Harvard and becoming a Criminal Psychologist.

Hello. My son is 11 years old and currently goes to secondary school. He has dyslexia and struggles in a large class at his school. However, despite this I have never known a child as hard working, passionate and ambitious as him. He gets angry in class because others don't want to listen in class as much as him and he gets very upset when the other children distract him. He goes to after school clubs such as homework, maths and English out of his own choice because he tries so hard to be smart and wants to go to university so much. The reason I feel he would benefit at a private school is because he is so intelligent and very creative and so passionate about school and learning. Also because the classes are smaller he would receive more help than he currently receives. He is exceptionally well behaved and takes everything so serious. His dream is to become either a fashion designer or a mathematician and he is very good at maths. I know sponsorships is meant for children with a special skill such as music or drama etc, but my child is the most hard working, ambitious child I have ever known and I want the best education for him and the chance for him to become successful in the future. His dyslexia gets in the way a bit but his determination is so strong he says he WILL get top grades and do well at school. I really hope someone out there can help us make his dreams come true.

I've been looking for scholarships since I graduated secondary school. Please guide me if there are any options avaible for me. Thank you for your time.

You would have to really pick the school of your choice and request directly about entrance exams and scholarships available for your son. I'm afraid, we cannot recommend schools directly.

However if successful I gaining either she will nit be here to continue her schooling as we are returning to New Zealand permanently. Would there be scholarships of the same in New Zealand Tha i can apply for?
GetTheRightSchool Editor 16/09/2015 at 2:47 pm
You can apply for your son to apply for an independent school. However, they are fee-based, so unless your son is entitled to a bursary or scholarship, you will have to pay. You can see what criteria is needed via the Good Schools Guide here.

@Daphne - it's nice that all your children are bright and I'm sure they will do well in any school here. Each school has it's own scholarship criteria, so once you have your visas you would have to apply directly to your school of choice. Good luck!

My daughter is going into year 10 in September, attending an independent grammar school in West Midlands. She has been always top in the class since year 7 averaging +92% in all her subjects. The school has been giving me 30% discount every year and I thought would cope, with the NHS nurse salary, this end up putting me in debt with the taxman as taxes are behind. I wish not to take my daughter off that school as she is doing very well. Is there anyone who knows ways of getting some assistance in paying the fees so I can continue keeping my daughter in the same school. Thank you in advance

@Jen - according to the Good Schools Guide, if your child was reading at three, knew his tables at four and devoured science books whole at aged seven, then you may be able to secure a bursery. However, these burseries don't come along often. You can see what criteria is needed via the Good Schools Guide here . I hope this helps.

Hello
Can this be done mid term ?
My daughter starts school this september, she is incredibly bright, and I am really worried that she will be held back in a class of 30.
She is only 4, do they test them at this age ? And if so how ?
My husband completed 11 years service in the forces as an officer, does this mean because he took redundancy that we now have less of a chance because he is not serving ?
Thanks in advance

Hey I'm Ellie, I'm from Leeds in England. I'm currently in year 10 and I play a lot of sport, I play for Yorkshire and north England ladies u15 and have recently been asked to be part of the north England u18 sevens team for the "sainsburies school games". Also I'm in a talented and gifted academy where 24 girls in England train regularly and build blocks upto playing for England, this is the highest point I can get to at this age as the national side doesn't start until u20. On top of rugby I am a keen athlete competing in English school championships twice, football is another big part of my life playing recently with my county side. Thank you
GetTheRightSchool Editor 15/05/2015 at 1:36 pm
@face - I'm afraid in order to get a bursery, your parents would have to go through the proper immigration procedures in order to come to the UK. Or if you are old enough you, would have to apply yourself for a student visa.

@Beka - are you a member of any drama, dance or theature school locally? As it would be worth you while having as much involvement as you can. While the school offers support to those who can't pay, it is usually to students who are progressing from one course to another or to students who are currently training on one of their full-time courses. Its website also says a special provision is usually made for an outstanding Associate School Student who has been selected for a place in the Theatre Arts School and who would be unable to undertake full-time training without financial help. I hope this helps.

I am Fana Gudula from Dongwe I am currently doing grade 9 this year under the premises of Funda High School I will be turning 14 years old I'm a cool, calm, polite e.t.c boy, I'm asking for a scholarship because of I want to study at Get Ahead College, Queens High School or Hexagon, the reason why I'm asking for this scholarship because I know my parents can't afford my payments of the schools I want to be in because at my home only the source of income is social grant and the reason why I chose those schools because I see their High rates of academics and other things like sport is available, and I'm in to Debate, Poetry, Drama and public speaking, I'm studying hard and I'm passing with high marks and I'm studying towards the carrer of my choice because my biggest aim is to become the best well known doctor ever seen and I'll also make the positive impacts on the people on the ground and later specialise in nuerosurgery I will be the phsychological doctor, As a student I know what is expected of us individually. Because I understand that the are teacher equiped to guide us towards our carrers at those schools I've mentioned above. All my subjects I get 80% and above I'm brilliant I have 22 awards with 8 cups and 2 medals ! Because of being brilliant I really need this scholarship and I really want to study at a private school or the schools I've mentioned above. No matter this year or next year! With the hope I'll recieve this scholarship. At my home there are no hassles which regards to school tasks.

For more information about me search me on #GOOGLE! @ Fana Gudula! You'll see me even carrying my Awards.

@Brun There is help out there for gifted children. The National Association for Gifted Children is a small charity sustained mainly by fundraising and while it is not in a position to offer
financial help for tuition, private tutoring, personal projects, it can offer
resources you can consult if you need financial help. You can locate its 'grants, funds and scholarship' information sheet, via potentialplusuk.org.uk. Hope this helps.

@mohsen - There is an Identify Gifted and Talented PDF booklet that you can download from the internet that helps in identifying the child's capabilities and from where you can register. I'm sure that will guide you in all the help you need in finding her a future scholarship. Hope this helps.

Hi I am looking for assistance from interested person/s, my daughter is 8 years old and in grd 3
she is exceptionally talented in school especially in maths, from grd 1 her marks till now for all subjects are 90 to 100, we live in an area where the schools are so poor that she feels like not going to school. If there is anyone who is willing to help I would be grateful, not only will this child grow up to be an independent, exceptional young woman with excellent grades throughout her life and into college, I know if given the opportunity she will achieve this with distinctions. This little girl needs to prosper with the right help she can fly. Thanking you.

I have an 8 year old daughter in grade 3 who effortlessly averages 97%, and also attends a private independent school in the south of Johannesburg. I am currently laid off and find the job marked a bit harder to re-enter than I initially anticipated, and my daughter's mom is facing pretty much similar circumstances.

I need to find out how I can go about applying for financial assistance until such time that I'm in a position to handle such responsibilities on my own again.

Please respond to the furnished e-mail address, thanking you in advance.

To Whom It May Concern:
I'm requesting applications to scholarships/ spinsorship for a student who will be in grade 8 in 2014. He is an excellent soccer player. Would like to enroll him into a private school to be prepared for higher education. Unfortunately, he has fallen through the cracks of publics education which neglects to address his educational needs because of class room crowding and limited teaching resources.
Thank you for your assistance.

My daughter, aged 10, has attended an independent day school for girls in the UK for two years. Prior to her moving to the UK, she was educated at an international school in Hong Kong. She has sadly been struggling for the past two years in maths and english, but has excelled in drama and the arts. Due to her shy nature and always having attended private schools with low class student ratios, I feel that she would be lost in a large state school and thus suffer further with her academic subjects I write to seek advice on securing a scholarship or bursary as I am no longer able to afford boarding school fees due to separating from my husband.

My name is Celia and I am 14 years old, with a nationanilty of Thai.I have been studying in England for a period of 8 years and returned back to Thailand for 1 year at Monfort college. Now in 2013 my parent have decided to take me to study in Auckland, Long Bay College, year 10. Where as I can develop my education and get a higher future with this I can contribute a lot for the world. With this scholorship I can release the stress for my parent becuase they cannot continue to pay for my studies in New Zealand as the school fee is over my parents extend. I have a older brother who is wanting to study in Russia as a doctor and a younger sister who is currently studying in Thailand at an English Program school called Monfort College. My family can not handle to pay this large amount of money for 3 children but by getting a scholorship will become very beneficial. From what I've seen about myself I am a hard working person, Who wants to study and become a lawyer that can contribute many thing for the people and the country.

Our 5 year old boy is extremely bright and has an excellent concentration span.. He reads to the equivalent of an 8 year old and has a fantastic memory for learning..! He attends a local primary school who adores him and have identified how intelligent he is..! This had been communicated to us via school end of year reports and parents evening..! However in his year 2 class there are 30 students and my son dislikes the noise and mayhem..! He tells us that its so hard to work at times and we worry that his learning will be affected..! His teachers are so busy with the more needy pupils that he is becoming overlooked in the context of: he is quiet and works well independently ..! His father and I would dearly love to reward all his hard work and commitment by providing him with the opportunity of a private education..it would be such a good opportunity for him.! However we are unable to pay the full fees and would appreciate some advice on what we could do to support him..!

Dear Gem,
As a mother of two children, with a daughter who hasjust won a music scholarship to a top independant school, i can only advise you to be glad your son is September born! On paper most senior schools appear award scholarships based on age ie not older than 13 on sept first. My daughter wont be !3 until the end of august and it has been a galop for her musicaly but more so physically and mentally.there is a big gap between 4and 5 year olds and this tends to be more obvious in boys.Looking at my daughter now she feels a little left behing by her peers and seems to have more in common with the year below her.She too is bright, early to everything and in the top set at school but dont believe its a sign of great things to come.Children peak at different times and in hind site I wish I had held her back, its very difficult but speak to friends with older children.Yes im sure he seems more than ready for school, most 3-4 year olds are but also rem hes still a baby and cherish that. With age brings confidence and in my opinion the more confident children in a year group are either older or have older siblings.
I hope this helps

I have a 2.5yr old child who is showing great mathematic skills in writing and recognising numbers and can also write his name .... how would this pan out for scholarships into prep school...i want my child to have the best education although im not in a financial position to pay myself..he also misses out on going to school next yr as his birthday is in sept so is going to be kept back until the following year...my worry is that if he is acheiving this now and he cant go to school when academically i think he is capable then his development will be greatly hindered as nursery can only do so much...any advice is greatly received

I am 11 years old and I am in year 6 going to year 7 and i really want to get a scholarship to go to a boarding school so i can learn really well and be able to afford the fees to go there. I also want it to make my family proud by getting what no one in my family could achieve and to be proud of myself for once

Does anyone know of any UK schools that offer scholarships for diving (like Tom Daley, not PADI-type)?
