We have already looked at how to place our children in schools abroad and how to help them fit in once they have made the transition to a foreign school but it is worth noting that the reverse can apply as foreign students are now becoming commonplace in our schools in the United Kingdom.

This can happen because a family has come to the United Kingdom in relation to employment or because they are wishing to seek Asylum in the United Kingdom. Whatever the case every child is entitled to an education and as such every attempt is made by the schooling system and the Local Education Authorities to make sure that places are available for any foreign student wishing to seek an education here.

Differences to be Aware of

For the most part the principle is the same for those families wishing to relocate to the United Kingdom as it would be for those families leaving the United Kingdom for foreign climbs. Although in saying that there are some noticeable differences.

The main difference being that we – in the United Kingdom – teach our children in English as our first language with foreign languages such as French German, Spanish and now in some schools Mandarin – bringing up the rear in language stakes. This, just as it is British children moving abroad – a stumbling block that needs to be overcome for any foreign student to gain a reasonable and satisfactory level of education.

Tips

Just as with British children, it is important and a good investment of time, for a foreign family to visit and select a list of schools that would appeal to their individual child’s needs should that be a course of action open to them. Obviously if the family are seeking asylum in the United Kingdom then a visit before hand is a lot less likely and it can sometimes be a lottery in terms of finding a place for their children. Local Education Authorities will help with this as best they can in conjunction with the Foreign Office and British Consulate to their country of origin.

It is also worth noting that foreign students will fall under the same system of criteria as British children when it comes to the application process for a specific school. Their applications will be determined not so much on the merits of where they are from – in relation to country – but where they are living in relation to the distance from the schools of choice etc. This is the same for all children and indeed the same applies for any benefits that might be obtained; school meals, financial assistance for travel and uniforms etc.

If you are from a foreign country and wish to place your child or children in full time education in the United Kingdom it is worth noting that there may be – in some schools – a rudimentary series of aptitude tests that may need to be taken – in order to gauge the level of your child’s learning to date, especially if they have already been in education in your home country. This may also include a basic test as to how they cope with the English language that – as we have already discussed – is the first language in our schools.

Some schools do teach in other languages as a first choice language but these schools it is worth mentioning – have limited places available and normally have long waiting lists. This also applies to specific religion schools such as those that teach Hinduism and other religions practiced mainly abroad.

In conclusion it is not impossible to place your child in a United Kingdom school if you are from abroad but there are certain stumbling blocks that have to be overcome so if you are relocating to the United Kingdom from abroad and have the time to do so, it is a worthwhile endeavour to take the time to find out what your child’s best options are.

Hi, we are moving to UK from Spain this week. We also have the school for our daughters, but we are quite worried with the situation with our oldest daugther. She is turning 14 in September, she just finished 2º ESO (Year 9 in UK) and she should be placed in Year 10 now in UK (3º ESO) in Spain, but since in the UK entry stages vary from Spain, they are enrolling her in Year 9, which is the course she already did in Spain. Is there any possibility to move to Year 10? How we should approach this with the school?

Hi, My friend's daughter who is turning 18 has decided she wants to move to the UK from Spain to be with her father (also from Spain) who has a residency in the UK. She has been part of the Spanish education system, but never finished her high school and is looking to transfer over to the Sixth form. I am a British national living with my husband (Indian National) in Saudi Arabia for past 16 years. My husband works here and is an Indian National.
I have 3 kids aged 15, 10 and 9. All are British national (Hold British passport). They all are studying in Indian Curriculum (CBSC) here in Saudi Arabia. 
We are planning to move back to UK (Blackburn, BB1) in next couple of months and bit worried about impact it can have on children's education.
My Son aged 15 is in Grade 10 of CBSC which we presume is equivalent to GCSE in UK. The main language of Education is English and he has subjects of Maths, Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology), History, Geography, Computer Science and second language Arabic.
We need some guidance to know the procedure regarding shifting from Indian Curriculum to UK GCSE. 
Will he be able to enrol in any schools from September to take GCSE ?
Is there a specific procedure for this such as getting grade 9 marks verification ?
Does he need to sit for any aptitude tests or English tests?
My daughters aged 10 and 9 are in junior schools. Will they be able to enrol in UK junior school based on their age?
Your support on this will be highly appreciated as we are bit worried in this regard.

He is very advanced in academically. @Syed - the school can help. But your kids will be behind still if English is not their first language until they get to grips with the language. I'd get some private lessons in France before they come to the UK to give them a head start.

We would like to bring a minimum of five students over to the UK for short term (7 week) placements into state schools. We have looked into guardianships but these seem very expensive and we are already satisfied with our host families that are regularly inspected, are all DBS checked/gas checked and use to hosting students.

HI! i am 16.I was born in Bangladesh and studied in Bangladesh as well. MY school in Bangladesh wasnt an English medium one but i stood first in my entire area(thana) in the major exam called Junior Scholarship Certificate(jsc).Though i have an Italian citizenship for my father,i spent my life in Bangladesh.Now its been 5 months we have come here and i am attending a sixth form college for my GCSE although i should have been in a school . But because of me being over 16,they wouldnt enrol me in a school.I have come here with my family only for my education and one thing is i havent stood 2nd in my entire life. But now i am worried about the fact that there is only 4 months left before my exam and at the same time i want to do the best. But to be realistic,you cant expect an A* from a student who is extremely new in this country and also not from an English language based school.It took 2 months to understand the British accent for me.Although i am getting B's in science and A's in maths and the worst D's in English, i am stil not happy with my grades.I know that i have the abiliy to give something special to every school i have attended so far but this coming late in london and getting only 9 months instead of full 2 years is misjudging me.Education system should be changed for the students coming from abroad.They should get an equal chance too.After all theres nothing to lose.Stil spending hours and hours on my studies.Btw i want to be an aeronautical engineer.THANKS ALL.If theres any tips for me dont hesitate to let me know!!

Hi, i am at present living in spain with my wife and 6 years old child who as spanish nationality and we have permanent residence of spain but indian passport.
My child right now is studying in wingates british english private school.
As we are looking to shift my child to uk state funded school bcoz here fees are very high and is it possible that my child who is having spanish passport can get admission in uk schools.
If he get admission can only one of the parents can travel with child bcoz i have my permanent job here.

Hi I've got a question regarding schooling for one of my friends who is 17 years old moving from hungary into this country (London) and due to Hungarians only gaining their GCSE's when they're 16 and 17 she doesn't know what step to take as she hasn't got any GCSE's to show up in college so I recommended for her to ask a high school near of maybe her going there for 1-2 years to get a GCSE and then she's able to request a place in college, I'd be greatful for any advice and help from anyone. Contemplating returning There are no GCSEs here. If we move to the UK can she access sixth form without them? Hi. I'm currently studying in the Philippines, in Grade 11 (or Year 12) and I was wondering if it's possible to transfer to a school in the UK sometime around December. I'm a bit worried as I might be behind, considering that school there starts in September. Would I be accepted despite my late enrollment? I'm planning to complete at least one semester here (which ends in November) before I decide to study in London as I wish to finish my high school education there. My parents are worried that I may not be accepted and I'd end up having to skip a year. Is it also possible to start sixth form without having GCSEs? Pardon me as I'm a bit new about the way the system works there ^^

@vidhya - If you have a visa to bring you and your child to the UK, you will find all schools have an EAL (English as an additional language) provision for pupils. However, as in any learned subject this can take time as it can put students back in their educational levels while first and foremost try to get to grips with the language. If you want the best start for your child, then teaching them English prior to coming to the UK is your best option, so they don't find the transition too difficult. Tom

We are German nationals with extended family in the UK. Our son is 17, speaks fluent English and he just finished his German Abitur (UK A level equivalent). He would like to continue studying in the UK. There's a possibility he might need to redo his A level if he does not meet the requirements offered for a place at university and if this is the case, he prefers repeating only year 13 in a British school starting September 2017. We need some tips on how to proceed and information on costs involved. Do we need to be residents as parents or is it sufficient for him to stay with his grandparents/Aunties/Uncles who are all British nationals?

We are UK parents but moved to Germany 3 years ago. My daughter will start German school this September (a year early for German kids). She is 5. In England her peers are in reception and can read and write already. It looks like we may have to move back to UK in a year (so after her Year 1 here) but I'm worried this may mean she is behind the school system in UK in terms of what she can do. She is a fluent English and German speaker and bright. I have been trying to teach her to read English but not being a teacher it is difficult. I don't really want to uproot her now she's set to start the local school to change her to an International School as the move itself will be a challenge.Would it be usual for her to have to start a year below or at that age can they catch up quickly? She'll be 6 when we move.

Hello. my daughter is 16 , we moved to Scotland on January. She was a full time student
in Greece.
The local high school doesn t accept her because of the exams on S5.They suggested
college which
told us we have to pay 1080 pounds because she isnt already one year in UK. All these
answers with 3 months of delays.So even if we wanted to send her back to finish school
in Greece she has flunked the school year because of absences. Do they have the right to
denay education to a child just because she turned 16? She didnt choose to drop school.

Much depends upon the school she is going to and what its specific policy is and whether it is a fee-paying or state school. If your niece is going into a state school she may have to step back a year in order to bring her in line with the UK GSCE syllabus. However, much is dependent upon the school too, therefore speaking with the her future school directly is the best advice.

MY niece will be coming from South Africa in August to live in the U.K on a permanent basis. She is at school in Cape Town and is currently in grade 11.
What grade will she be going into when she arrives here in the U.K ? She is a British Citizen and therefore a British Passport holder and English is her first language.

By law, all state (not private) schools must have a behaviour policy in place that includes measures to prevent all forms of bullying among pupils.You would need to report these incidents to the head of the school whether the school is private or state run, I hope this helps.

I am a seventeen(17) year-old female student from Greece about to move with my parents in London. I still have the last class to complete before I finish high school. I was attending a public Music school in Greece. Could you please inform me about the procedure for me to relocate my education in London? What are the needed documents? And what are the better choices for me: a)to continue to a greek school in London, or b) to start in an English one? If I have to start in an English one what are the qualifications I should have?

You don't say what visa your child has come into the UK on. If it is a standard visitor visa, then your child would not be allowed to study at a government-funded school.

If you have British citizenship, then you can return to study in the UK when you wish. If you have been granted ILR, then you have a two year window in which to apply to return to the UK. If you over step this time limit, you may have to re-apply for ILR, please see gov.uk which

It depends upon what type of school you are sending him to and the particular school's admission policy. If you are sending him to an independent school, in certain schools he may have to sit and pass an entrance exam before admission is allowed. Other schools may grade him either by sitting a test or by his age and/or his previous educational record. You would need to get in touch with the school directly to find out its policy or contact the Local Education Authority based in the area you are moving to.

According to the Good Schools Guide fees for independent schools can range from under £3,000 per annum to £27,000 and above for a day pupil and up to £40,000 per year for boarding. Due to the fact there are wide variations dependent upon the area, locations, reputation of school etc, you would have to approach the schools you have short listed individually in order to find out the fees.

You don't say whether you wish to put your children in private or state schools. Here is a link to the Indpendent Schools Council list of schools here. You can approach the school (s) of your choice directly once you know the area you will be moving to. Likewise, for state schools, once you know the area you will be living in you should approach the Local Education Authority for that area

The government currently has awarded extra funding to schools to help teach children English as an additional language in school time. The aim is to integrate new children into the classroom as efficiently as possible. You will be able to find out more if you approach the Local Education Authority when you admit your child to school. While support it given, it is always easier if your child has some basic knowledge of the language before coming to the UK to help him integrate and learn more quickly. One option is to enrol him on an English language course before he comes to the UK.

Presumably it is mandatory for him to attend school to finish his standard education. But, what support will be given? Will the LEA provide extra English language lessons and support guidance in regular classes, or offer special classes outside of the regular school, to be able to 'catch up' with the standard curriculum? For what we have gathered, it looks like no new/international students are accepted to entry on 11th. grade in the UK, so does that mean she will have to wait until she is 16 years old to apply for Sixth Form (grades 12 and 13)?

@Ben - What visa are your children coming in on? If they are coming in on yours then you may be able to apply for them to stay as dependents. If they are on a tourist visa, then they are tourists and can't register for a school.

My American grand daughter, age 13 going into year 9 next year, wants to spend a year with us and attend school in the UK. What type of visa would she need and is there a fee to be paid at our local school? She is very bright and we have a year to arrange this. Suggestions of where we should start?

I am a phd student and have been living in the UK since 2011. I am a non EU citizen. I supposed to finish my study next year. What my worry is I have 2 kids one of them has started his school in the UK and will be in year 4 next year. The other one was born in the UK and will be at class one as well. Our Visa is valid until 2017 . My question is that can they continue in their schools after our Visa expires? Or we should send them to a private school?

In some circumstances foreign nationals may be able to bring the following extended family members to the UK: parents, or widowed parent, where at least one is over the age of 65; grandparents, or a widowed grandparent, where one is over the age of 65. Children over the age of 18, siblings, aunts, uncles or any other relative may also be able to qualify to live in the UK with their resident family member if they satisfy certain conditions. Applications for settlement visas for family members are generally made on form VAF 4 Settlement or may be made online at the UK Border Agency’s website. I hope this answers your question.

Questions like this are often very difficult to predict as it really depends on the individual child and their personality; some will flourish and embrace the change, others may find it difficult to adjust. Given that your children are of an age where they can make their own decisions, you may want to consult with them directly. On a different note, there are many foreign students attending UK schools and as their parent, you will be the best person to know whether they may be able to cope with the academic changes. You could also talk to one of the schools of your choice directly, in order to gain some further insight and advice.

Hi, I am British and live in Malaysia. I have a daughter of 17 and a son of 15. Both are studying at a Malaysian private school but I am contemplating taking them out of their current school and sending them to boarding school in the UK because I don't think their school is getting the best out of them even though they are both doing well academically.

My concern is that socially and academically, it maybe difficult for my kids to adjust to a UK boarding school because many of the kids there will have grown up together and the style of instruction will be very different. An improvement, but different and at this stage in their education, I'm concerned that such a massive change in environment may have a negative impact.

You don't say whether you are re-locating to the UK, or how old your daughter is, therefore it makes it difficult to answer your question. However, if you are considering re-locating to the UK, you would have to fulfil the immigration criteria in order to place your daughter in a school here.

It really depends on what you wish to study and where you wish to live. Plus whether you want to study at a college or a school which offers A-level provision exclusively to students (and international students) aged 16-19. I suggest you do a bit more online research and apply directly for more information to the schools and colleges which fit your criteria. Remember, you will also need to find out about accommodation as some establishments will expect you to live in college accommodation, especially if you are under 18 years old. Some schools offer separate classes in order that children can gain essential skills in oral and written English. I should check with the local authority where you are planning to move to ensure your children can be catered for. Of course, to give your children the best option to keep abreast of their schoolwork, and help them integrate more efficiently, you may want to enrol them in some classes prior to your move to the UK.

My husband will work there for a project but we will just stay 4 months. She would start school here in Turkey in september but because we have to go to England, she cannot start here. My daughter is currently doing her GCSEs and would like to continue with A levels in the UK due to limited subjects in South Africa where we are from. She would live with my sister in the UK. @Neena - should she go into a state school then she may be placed in an intervention class, where they will be taught English until they can be integrated into a mainstream class. Each private school will have a different way of dealing with foreign students, so you would have to approach the school of your choice directly.

Those parents from non EU countries should google and learn the basic knowledge of immigration rules, in general foreigners (non EU citizen) simply cannot buy a flight ticket to UK and wish to settle in UK without proper resident visa. Without legal status it is illegal to work.

@Loentje - obviously the parents have to agree for her to come to live with you. You would have to apply for a student visa via the linkhere. You would also have to comply with the terms. However, as far as fees are concerned, she will have to be state educated if neither you or her parents can't finace her education, unless of course, she is intelligent enough to win a school bursery. I came across your site And wondered if you can advise us. We have a fourteen year old granddaughter who lives in Amsterdam Holland. She lived in the uk from a baby till 5 year's old until her Mother took her back to Holland. Our son moved there too in order to see his daughter. Both parents have been unable to make our grandchild happy. She is a very confused teenager, intelligent but emotionally damaged. As her grandparents we would like to educate her here in the UK. I have finished 9 grades with mostly A-s in elite school (one of Tallinn's best). I have also been in art school for 4 years (graduated it with A-s). Then I took a year off. Now I'd like to go back in high school, and I'd love to do this in London. My sister is in Imperial College and I also wish to study there one day (haven't decided yet if something including biology or business). So if I wanted to come to study in London starting fall (or summer, I am not sure when school year starts in London...) in 10th grade, what school would you recommend, keeping in mind my interests, college plans and that I am not the best in English... Can the LA refuse his application based on the fact that year 11 is the second year of Gcse and he hasn't completed the first year (his aim is not to take Gcse but rather to improve is Englsih before starting sixth form)?

Hi,

We are moving from France in July 2015 with my son of 10 and my daughter of 6. For the first two years the company may help with their tuition at ACS International School so we are thinking about putting the kids there to make a smooth transition.
However if we then decide to stay in the UK for another year or so, will our son be able to apply for some good grammar school (he will not have taken his 11+ exam while at ACS).

Hi,my daughter is turning 18 this summer and coming ti live with me in London.She has studied in Bulgaria for the last three years and prior been to school in England and has Year 10 completed.I would like to know who shall I address for an advice for where she could continue with her studies and get her GCSE and A levels

@Bee - Primary school years are split into Key Stages: Year 1, is age 5 to 6, year 2, age 6 to 7. You would have to apply to the local education authority and ask which year he would go into, as it may differ because of where his birth date falls and what level he is up to. I hope this helps.

Hi, we're thinking of moving back from Germany to England with our 6 year old son, he's british like his Dad and we lived in England until August 2013 ,the year he would have gone to school in England . Now its different here in Germany with the school he would go to school from these year in September . My question is in which class would he come if we move to England ,because at his age it would be class 3, right?

Hi.I am from Hungary and me and my husband will be moving to UK shortly with work. We have a 13 years old daughter who is under our tutorial. She doesn't speak English and I was thinking to find her maybe a private tutor who speaks some Hungarian to help with her studies until she will learn English good enough to join a school there. Could you please advise where or how can I find such tutors and where can I ask for tutorial help as her parents signed us a paper at the notary and we brought her to Hungary ( from Romania ), but not sure what is required in the UK in such cases.
The area is still not sure where will we go, London, or more to the South-East.

Hello, we are moving to London from Finland in August 2015 for my work (two-year period). We are looking for a primary school for our 5 and 7 years old daughters who don't speak English. We have started to teach as much we can and they are anxious about learning. How do we proceed about finding them a school if we will not have an address until August or even September? Is it possible to apply school before getting an address? We are searching house/flat and school from East London, any suggestions? Thank you!

@Ayesha - Factors that will affect your child will include his previous schooling experience, academic ability and English language capability and each school will offer different things. It might be a good idea that when you choose where you are going to live, consult the local school's Ofsted (Office of Standards in Education) report to find out about its quality of teaching and facillities as well as its academic results and whether it is the type of school that will help your son. You will then need to contact the school to see what its admission policy is. I hope this helps.

Hi my son who is half greek and half British holds a British passport. He has attended greek school until now and is wanting to attend sixth form in the UK next year. His spoken and written english is excellent but what qualifications will he need to go from a greek gymnasium school to UK sixth form. Has anyone else's child made this move stage? Please advise! Thx

I'm writing from Rome, Italy, where we live. My daughter (18-year-old next june, Italian) is in the 12th year of study (the 4th year of Italian Liceo Linguistico), in June 2016 she is supposed to pass the "maturità" examination, which I think is the equivalent for english A Level, after that she would like to applicate for the degree in medicine here in Italy, but she is also considering the possibility to study in GB. She is B2 level in english and she is coming in London for a couple of weeks for an intensive course in February to prepare IELTS. We were thinking for her about the possibility to attend her last year of study in a state school or a state boarding school in UK, possibly in London where she could have guardians, to obtain A level and then try to enter UK university. Should she attend 2 years of school (complete sixth form) or could she enter directly to the second year of the sixth form (13rd year of study) as she would do in Italy? Does the boy need a visa to start studying?
What year would he start at?
Any good public schools in the cornwall area for foreign students?
Cost of a private school in that area?

@roz - refugee and asylum-seeking children have the same rights to school education as other children in the UK and schools and LEAs are obliged to offer school places in accordance with their published admissions arrangements. I hope this helps.

I have a nephew who lives in Karachi, he is 12 years old and his parent want to send him over to the UK (where I reside) for his education. He is diagnosed with Dyslexia and has mild learning difficulties. What I would like to know is which is the best independent/ private school for him to go to. The fees are not an issue but finding a school in the West Midlands would be best. I need guidance of all the schools which he can possibly attend & the process. I am unaware of the whole process of bringing him over to the UK. Thank you :)

@Rob - do you know where in England you will be moving for your work? If you do then it stands to reason that you can pick a school or area and look at the schools based there. If you don't know where you are moving to, it might be a good idea to ask your company to finalise the district as soon as they possibly can due to finding a school for your son. The difficulty you would face coming in July is that all of the schools close for the summer and you have the added problem of trying to locate a school that caters for special educational needs, so it really is soething you need to get sorted sooner rather than later. I don't imagine you would need more tests from the UK regarding your son's autism. I think the Ireland diagnosis report will be suffice. I hope this helps.

i am from England and only moved to Ireland 6 years ago. i have been working back in England for 3 years and flying back and forth every two weeks.
we have been informed the school believe my son is autistic and have had the assessment done, and just waiting on the results now. will he need a assessment in England as well?

Hi

My Czech girfriend is currently 17 and will be 18 in early January. Her college have granted her permission to study in the UK for 6 months and as a member of the EU I do not believe that she needs a specific immigration permission to enter. Other than this it is all quite new and a minefield of info with many websites giving confusing information. Can you please advise what permissions, visa etc she will require. how she first looks to obtain this and what else she needs to do. accommodation and financial support is already in place but is she eligible for any additional support given that she is studying away from her home country etc? Really would appreciate any help you can give and.... ideally...... an expedited response as she needs to try and get this sorted by the start of the year!!

Hi, I already live in the UK for two years and so far my daughter who will be 16 this December has been studying and is still studying at home in Bulgaria. She is currently in year 10 in a National school of arts and music. Although she has been studying English since primary school I am afraid the level of her English - especially the verbal one is not as good at the moment and I am sending her to an intensive course to improve her English language skills. However I would like her to come and live with me next year, which means she will be 16 and half at that time and I want her to continue her education in year 11 or low sixth form. I am aware she will have quite a lot to catch up, but I would like to know what are the admission exams she will have to take to apply for an English secondary school - year 11 or sixth form.

In Spain children of the same calendar year go to the same year, in the UK the cut-off date, if I'm not wrong, is in September. That would mean that a boy born in December coming from Spain would effectively lost one year. Is there any option to validate him in order to be placed in the actual year he would be doing in Spain?

Hey im 15 next year i want to go to Newcastle in the Uk I'm half British and half Greek so i can get a British Passport ... So this time next year i want to move there and ill be 16 going to 17 . This is for Komal. If you are a Canadian national and you have the right to remain in the UK (ie. also a British passport holder for example), you can enrol your child at a school in your catchment area at no cost. However, if you do not have the right to remain then you must apply for a student visa OUTSIDE of the UK. I do not know if there are international fees at state schools like there is in Canada. My Canadian daughter was granted a 2 year visa to attend private boarding school. The visa must be renewed when the program is over, in this case GCSEs. The visa costs about $400 Cdn. As she was under 18, she also required a guardian in the UK. To get the visa, the school must provide a letter of acceptance (CAS) and you must prove you have CASH in the bank to pay for a full year of school fees up front.

We have jst moved to UK from Greece and our daughter, who is been born in August 2002, placed in year 6 in primary school. She doesn't speak enough english, so the school gives her extra support in language.
The problem is that she is going to have exams and secondary school next year, but we believe she is not ready for this, because she can't even speak good and also she has been placed one grade higher than in greece, where she was attempting the 5th grade.
Do you know if there is any way for her to be placed at 5th year?

We may be moving from Seville in Spain to Chester soon.My 8 year old son has been in the Spannish school system for three years and before that in school in France for three years,his Spannish and French are fluent, however his English is only average.I am Irish and my husband is French and neither of us know anything about the schools in Chester.It would be a great help if anyone could give some tips.

They will place your daughter in grade 2 and give her extra support with her English. My daughter was taken out of the class 2 times a week to have English support. Don't worry, she will be speaking fluent English in 6 months, and not long after, she will start correcting you :)
One tip: Teach her how to say basic things that she will need during her school day. Like: What is your name?, My name is..., How old are you?, "Where can I get a glass of water?", "Can I go to the toilet?", "Where is the toilet?", etc...

I forgot to tell my daughter the last two. So when she was desperate to go to the toilet, she tried to explain to the teacher by jumping and twisting her legs :D Fortunately the teacher understood in time!

Good luck with your move. I would like to reassure you that your daughter will catch-up in school very quickly and it will be very positive to know both languages.

Regarding documents, I just needed my daughter's birth certificate and proof of address, but I'm not sure in Edinburgh. Try to Google it, or call the council of the area you plan to move to.

I'm currently about to place our 4 year old daughter in an English school when she turns 5, she's Bulgarian as too is my other half, I'm English. We've both been working overseas for 6 years and our daughter has spent a lot of time in Bulgaria and for the last year or so been going to a Bulgarian nursery. She is very intelligent, gets on well with nearly all kids she plays with regardless of any language barrier, but of course she speaks little English just now and I just hope when we move permenantly home in a few months she'll pick up English more and be accepted into school and not isolated.
